- Scope and ContentHe was going up North End and between the grocer's and the blacksmith's shop he lost a sovereign. He was looking for it a long while. He was coming up North End again and saw the young lads and said to Mason "that is mine". Mason put it in his hand and he gave him a shilling for picking it up. He lost the sovereign about 1.30pm. He was running along and felt it jump out of his right hand breeches pocket. He was looking for it all that time. He was within 3 yards of the boys when it was picked up. He heard them jingling it and went to them directly. He told them directly that he had lost it. He had the sovereign by him for a long while. He will not tell who he received it from. He told several people he had lost a sovereign before he had it back from Mason. He told Joseph Cornburn of Great Horwood, John Tompkins of Leighton, Edward Sale of Ledburn and William Blake of Leighton. He saw them all passing by while he was looking, between 1.30 and 2pm. He did not see any of those men after it was found. He asked Mason help him to look for it. Mason was looking about for it with him for 10 minutes or 1/4 hour, and so was young Claridge. Goodball was not there at all. Claridge and Mason came up together and he told them both. He gave Mason a shilling directly he found it and gave it to him. [Taken May 25th, retaken May 27th]
