- Scope and ContentSarah Squires: wife of William Squires, keeper of the Carpenters Arms in New Town Street, Luton. On 4 December. she put a glass bottle containing brandy on a shelf in the bar window. On the evening of 5 December she wanted it and found it had gone. There was about half a pint of brandy in it. When produced she identified the bottle. Elizabeth Squires: she lived with the last witness and was her sister in law. She had repeated used the bottle and was able to identify it. Alfred Atherton Murfin: on 7 December he had occasion to search the prisoner’s lodgings. He found a bottle between the bed and mattress. The prisoner lived in Chapel Street near the Ebenezer Chapel. The bottle was empty but smelt of brandy. He took the bottle to Mrs Squire on 18 December, who identified it as the once she had missed. On 20 December the prisoner was taken into custody and said that he had been given the bottle by a boy, but could not say who the boy was.
