- Scope and ContentEmma Odell: on 3 December, she left a shawl hanging on the willows outside her house to dry. The next morning she missed it. She asked the accused if she had seen it and was told that she had not. [section crossed out] On 9 December, she went to Butcher's house and asked to see her shawl. She told Butcher she would know if it was her shawl but a particular mark. Odell identified it as her own. [sectioned crossed out]. Catherine Butcher: "I found it on the willows" Mary Ann Brown: on 7 December she was standing at the gate, opposite where she lived, in Charlton. She saw Catherine Butcher pass by. Butcher lifted one shawl from her shoulders to show another underneath it, which she had been given. Catherine Butcher: denied wearing the shawl on that day Eli Odell: on 9 December, his wife went to Mrs Norman's at South Mill to enquiry regarding the shawl, which Catherine Butcher claimed to have been given by her. Catherine Butcher said that she had stolen the shawl and she was very sorry and would never do the like again. Catherine Butcher: asked if Eli Odell had ever seen her wear the shawl. Hannah Norman: she knew Catherine Butcher and would sometimes give her things, but she did not give her the shawl.
