    John Chapman of Luton, police constable - on Sunday 7 November between 12 and 1am he was on duty in New Town Street, Luton when he was called by Mrs Hawkes to take Joseph Payne into custody. He went to the house and found Payne kicking up a great row, saying he would fetch his wife down by the hair of her head if she would not come down. Mrs Hawkes called her husband who asked him to take Payne into custody. He put the handcuffs on Payne's left hand. Before he could put them on the other hand Payne pulled it away and struck him a violent blow on the head with the handcuffs. They struggled. He charged Stephen Taylor to assist, which he did. With great difficulty they got Payne to the cage. William Hawkes of Luton - on 6th November in consequence of Joseph Payne having assaulted his wife he was called up about 8.30 at night. He went down the street and met 2 persons leaving her house. They got her to bed. Sometime after Joseph Payne came into the house and swore he would have her out by the hair of her head. He called Chapman and gave Payne into custody. Payne hit Chapman a violent blow. Chapman called Taylor to aid and assist which he did. Stephen Taylor - on Sunday 7 November between 12 and 1am he was at Mr Hawkes house when Chapman came in. Payne was making a great disturbance. He heard Mr Hawkes give him into custody to Chapman. Payne struck Chapman a violent blow on the head with the handcuffs. He was caleld to aid and assist and after a great deal of trouble Payne was taken to the cage.
