- Scope and ContentOn Monday 18 October at about 11pm he was sent for to the Horse and Jockey public house. The house was crowded and he was asked by the landlord to clear it. He did so. They all left except William Field., who threw himself down on the form and said he would not be put out. He called John Chapman another policeman to get Field out. Field struck Chapman, then struck and kicked him [Ashton]. Henry Smalley the policeman came in and Field struck and kicked Smalley. They got him into the street. Field refused to walk and they were obliged to pull him along. When they got him opposite to Mr John Waller's shop the mob were very violent and assailed them with stones. There might have been 100 people there. The 2 constables held Field, who struggled very much, kicked at the constables, struck with his head and feet and hands and threw the constables down in the street several times. They then took him to the cage.
