she said she had not attempted to steal those things. In mid Summer she had cut up the table cloths to make work cloths for the knife basket and had the pastry napkins to mend. The bundle found in the closet had been there since June and the towel had been put in her room by the housemaid for her use. The tea and sugar had been bought in London and the burnt towel had been her own. She had bought it 10 years ago.
