- Scope and ContentI am about 18 years of age, was born in Ireland where my father John Coles then was with the Bedfordshire Militia. I have often heard him say that his settlement was at Chippenham in the County of Wilts. I lived with my father until Christmas 1829 when I went to live with Mr Thomas Rayner of St Peter, Bedford, harness maker by the week at one shilling a week till August 1830. At Michaelmas 1830 I let myself to Mrs Rickword of St John by the year as general servant at the wages of five pounds and received one shilling earnest. My mistress and I not agreeing I only stayed 6 months. I have not done any act to gain a settlement in my own right. I am unmarried and with child.
