  • Scope and Content
James Peacock: confirmed the spade produced to be his, as he can identify it by its marks and his initials. He had given the spade to his son in January 1851 to do some work on the farm. William Peacock: was given the spade by his father in January and worked with it for about 3 weeks on his land. He frequently left it with his other tools in the field at night, and covering them with faggots. About 3 weeks after beginning the work, he missed the spade. He could not find it and did not suspect anyone. Charles Dale: on 16 June he received information that Peacock had lost a spade which he had now seen on Page's premises. He went with Peacock to search Page's premises and they found the spade. He took the prisoner into custody. The prisoner said he had bought the spade at Bedford, and he added that Stanton the blacksmith of Keysoe had made the bruise on it. On 17 June he asked Stanton if he knew anything of the spade, and he denied knowing anything of it.
