  • Scope and Content
William Wooding of Houghton Conquest, labourer - on Tuesday 30 March he was going under a cart hovel used by his master Mr Newman and by Mr Richard Quenby. He saw Redman take up the pieces of wood produced, put them through a fence into the rick yard and then cover them with some straw. He made believe as if he did not see him. He informed Mr Benjamin Quenby of what he had seen. Benjamin Quenby - he manages his father Richard Quenby's farm at Houghton. On the previous Tuesday Wooding informed him Redman had taken some wood from the cart hovel and showed him where it was. Some of the wood was used to set the roller on, some formed part of a fence. Redman was there at work in the garden. He and John Brightman watched at night to see if Redman would come for the wood. About 7.30pm, he saw Redman come into the close, then lost sight of him. Brightman came and told him Redman had gone away with some turnips. They went after Redman and he accused him of stealing the turnips. Redman denied having been to the rick yard. He fetched a policeman and gave him into custody. Redman then told him where he had laid the turnips. They searched but could not find them, but later found 19 turnips hidden in a double hedge on the other side of the same field where Redman said he had put them. John Brightman of Houghton Conquest, labourer - he was in Mr Quenby's rick yard to watch some wood. About 7.30pm he heard someone get over the hedge and saw Redman come to a heap of turnips. He saw Redman pick up several and go away with them. He heard Redman get over the hedge into the road. He told Benjamin Quenby who was watching the other side of the rick yard. Quenby went after Redman and met him coming towards them. Quenby went for a constable. Redman asked him to let him go and throw the turnips away. He said he had 3 turnips. Charles Walsh, police constable number 11 - Redman was given into his custody. He took Redman to the place where the wood was hidden. Redman at first denied knowing anything about it but afterwards said he had only put it there out of the way. He asked Redman where he had put the turnips. Redman took him to the place he said he had put 3, which he said were all he took. James Redman - he had nothing to eat and so he took the turnips. He was not going to have the wood. He only put it out of the way.
