  • Scope and Content
Samuel Spendelow of Ampthill, shoemaker - on 22 February 1841 when he came downstairs at 7.30am he found the outside door of his shop open and 2 large squares of the window broken. He missed a gun and a quantity of Neats leather and binding leather. He went into another room and saw his soling leather, a boy's great coat, 2 pairs of new shoes, one pair of boy's shoes, one pair of girl's shoes and some more things were gone. A boy who sleeps in the house, Josiah Sawyer, came down about a 1/4 hour before him. He heard Sawyer go out of the front door directly - he did not go near the shop. Sawyer is now at Woburn. The previous Tuesday in consequence of some information he went to Mr Joyce a pawnbroker at Newport Pagnel (Bucks) where he found the gun and the pair of boy's shoes. He can swear to the piece of binding leather and the Neats leather now produced by James Wyld as his, by the way in which they are cut. He thinks the soling leather is also his. Edward Underwood - he never stole the leather, the gun or none of these. He was "at home bad at the time they were stole". Thomas Page - the same night Sherwood and he were drinking at Ampthill. Joseph Hardwick said he knew where he could get some potatoes and where they could sell them. Hardwick said it was at Axams. The three of them went there. The other two went in and he stood by the gate. There was a light at Axams and they said they'd go and try at Sheffield's shop. They all three went. Hardwick stood in the road and Sherwood and he went to the door. Sherwood unlocked it, went in and took away a pair of shoes and another pair of unfinished shoes. It was about 1am. Hardwick said somebody was coming and they went away. They went across Mr Morris's fields and Sherwood said "let's go and see if we can get anything out of Spendelow's shop". He and Sherwood went. Sherwood broke a pane of glass. It was then getting towards 2am. Sherwood let the shutter down and unbolted the door. They both went in and Sherwood took the gun and the leather and hid them in a bundle handkerchief. They took them all to Millbrook and put them in the Church porch between the ceiling and the roof.
