- Scope and ContentJohn Swift of Dunstable, labourer - he is not able to support his wife and children having lost the usse of his left arm. They are all now in the Union Workhouse and chargeable to the parish of Dunstable. About 10 years ago he went to Chelsea and was hired by Richard King Thomas a linen draper residing at Nos 1 and 2 Kings Road at the corner of Sloane Square. He is now dead. There was an agreement drawn up but not on a stamp that he should serve him for 4 years for £5 p.a for the first 2 years, £7 10s the 3rd year and £10 the 4th year. He served the whole 4 years and received his pay regularly. He has never done anything since by which he could gain a settlement in any parish. The sister of his former master Richard King Thomas is now living in the Brompton Road. Her name is Prosser and her husband is a linen draper. She can confirm this information. William Gardner, master of the Union Workhouse at Luton - John Swift, his wife and children were admitted on the 19 September by an order from the relieving officer. They have been there ever since and are charged to Dunstable parish.
