John Bertram of Turvey, stone mason - he is employed by Mr Millar at Bedford and was at work as a stone mason at Turvey House on Monday 27 October. He missed a steel drag and a steel chisel. He saw the chisel again the previous day. William Laycock, who was employed at Turvey House by Mr Wing, gave it up to him after he asked for it. At first he denied having it and refused him permission to search among his tools, but later gave it to him. He saw the steel drag that morning. Laycock produced it at the Tinker public house in consequence of the policeman searching his bundle. James Lucas Marriott of Turvey, plasterer - the previous afternoon he lost a steel scratching tool. Laycock had been in his workshop at Turvey House at about that time. He saw the scratching tool at dinner time at the Tinker public house - the policeman asked him to see if there was anything of his on the table. Thomas Tillyard, constable - John Bertram came to him that morning in the Fishes public house and described his loss. They went to the Tinker public house where William Laycock was. He charged Laycock with stealing the tools and searched his bundle. He found nothing of Bertram's, but Laycock produced some drags from his side pocket, one of which Bertram claimed. He took Laycock into custody and returned to the Fishes. He then found the steel scratch in Laycock's pocket , along with a plated sugar beaker which Mrs Sherrington of the Tinker public house owned as her husband's property. William Laycock - he was badly off, which is why he took the things
