- Scope and ContentJohn Jones of New Mill End, Luton, miller - on 20 September 1839 (Luton Statute day) Oakley, who was then in his service, left his house about 11am to go to Luton Statute without his consent. Before Oakley left the house he saw a brace of pistols, a powder flask and shot belt (his property) in the kitchen. He was at Luton on the following Monday and heard Oakley had got a pistol and had been trying to borrow powder and shot. On returning home he found his pistols, shot belt and powder flask had been stolen. On Tuesday 24th his neighbour William Gamby brought one of the stolen pistols to him, and on 13 October the powder flask was brought to him by Charles Costin. The pistol is worth 2s 6d and the powder flask 1s. William Gamby of New Mill End, Luton, smith - soon after last Luton Statute day his servant John Sibley gave the pistol to him and he gave it to Mr Jones. Charles Costin of Ailey Green, Caddington (Herts), carpenter - he knows the powder flask by a mark on the inside near the letter B which is stamped upon it. On 21 September he bought the flask from Oakley at the Crown and Anchor Public House at Luton for 1s and a pint of beer. Hearing Mr Jones had lost a powder flask he took it to him at his house and he said it was the one he had lost. Edward Oakley - had nothing to say.
