William Beach: found the prisoner on 5 April in Smithfield market. On being taken into custody, and charged with the theft of 2 horses, he said he knew all about it and had sold them at Royston fair, to a man he thought to be called Taylor. He later made a voluntary statement to Beach, stating that; he had been at Godmanchester Fair with Dawson, and come down to Ravensden where they had agreed to steal Mr Ward's horse. After taking Mr Ward's horse, Dawson suggested they take Mr Walker's too. They then took the horses across the fields into the Kimbolton Road, through Little Staughton to Buckden, Godmanchester and then to Royston Fair.
