  • Scope and Content
Henry Fowles - he bought the spectacles innocently not suspecting they were stolen. The boy said they were picked up on the Goldington Road and Mr Cobb's apprentice was with him. William Holmes - the watch was brought to him accidentally. He knows nothing about it. William Fowles said it was his watch and he asked Fowles to let him have it to work by in the shop. Fowles agreed if he would go to the expense of repairing the watch. He took it to Levy's in the High Street and had it repaired at a cost of 5s 6d. The spectacles were brought to him first and the little boy said he he found them on the Clapham Road and wanted to sell them. He said he would not buy them because he thought they were the boy's mother's. The boy then went down to Mr Fowles's and they were making fireworks between them - Mr Fowles's son John and the little boy - and then he heard the boy had sold them. The boy offered to sell him some books, claiming his mother was going to move nd they had some old books they wanted to sell - the History of Greece and the History of England were of no use to them. The boy brought them to the garret the next morning, and he bought the History of England for 6d. William Fowles - did not not ask him to bring other things. He did not sign for Clarabut to come into the house - he came in of his own accord by the back door. Clarabut showed the watch to his father and asked said it was his. Clarabut came into the front room with him and shewed him the watch. He put his hat on and went out. Clarabut showed him the watch again. He said the watch was his. He asked Clarabut if he could sell it - Clarabut used foul language and said yes. He bought the watch for 1s and a further 3d. Clarabut asked if he woudl buy any books and he said he would like the History of Greece. Clarabut said he had it in his bedroom and would bring it. He gave 6d for it. He also bought the snuff box for 3d.
