- Scope and ContentMary Ann Ashpool: Samuel Johnson came into her husband's grocers shop and asked for half an ounce of tobacco and a pipe. He paid with a half crown, which Mrs Ashpool put into the till. It was the only silver in the till. She later tested the coin and found it to be bad. James Oliver: was apprentice to Charles Brown Sell, a Leighton Buzzard grocer. The prisoner John James came to the shop and asked for 2 eggs. He paid with a half crown. Oliver identified this as bad, kept it separate and gave it to Mr Sell. Charles Brown Sell: was given the counterfeit coin by James Oliver and passed it on to the police.
