- Scope and ContentMary Odell of Luton, single woman - before last Michaelmas she saw John Allen in the street at Luton near Barbers Lane about 12.30am. He wanted her to go down Barbers Lane - he took her shawl off her shoulders and said if she did not go she should not have her shawl. He went down Barbers Lane. She went to the watchman and told him John Allen had her shawl. The watchman went after him. The next time she saw her shawl was when it was produced before the magistrates. Isaac Jarvis - before Michaelmas he was crossing the road near Barbers Lane and saw John Allen with Mary odell. He saw Allen take the shawl off her shoulders and threw it down behind him. Allen stooped down and picked it up again. The policement and watchman came up and he left. Francis Butterfield the younger - one Saturday night in August between 11pm and 12am he heard a disturbance in the street and somebody say they had lost a shawl. A little after 12am as he was going home after putting up the stalls he passed Barbers Lane and picked up a shawl. He met Mr Lee the policeman and the watchman with him by the Black Swan, and gave him the shawl. They went to the Kings Arms and put a private mark on it.
