    Charles Edward Bottoms: was approached by William Simpkins who told him Joseph Hyde was offering for sale a spade, he knew to be Bottoms, at the White Horse public house in Shillington. He went with Hazzard to see the accused. The accused originally said he had sold the spade but later took them to Gravenhurst where he showed it to them in a brook. Daniel Hazzard: the prisoner told him he wished that he had not done it but he had done it for drink.
