- Scope and ContentAbout 40 years of age. Born in Swineshead, County ofHuntingdon where his father resided and belonged. When he was 13 he let himself to Rev. Mr Bunting at Yielden by the year to wait on table and other general work. He was to have 50 shillings for the first year and if he stayed two years his was to have his livery. He did stay the two years and received three pounds for the last years service and his livery. He was then bound apprentice to his father by Indenture dated 11 Dec 1798 for seven years. It was dated a year back to save him from serving in the militia. He never worked for his father but came to Bedford and worked there as a journeyman carpenter the whole time except going to Swineshead at Christmas and Whitsuntide of his own accord. His father did not pay him anything nor did he require it. He never allowed his father any part ofhis earnings. He considered himself his apprentice. Soon after he was out of his time he was married at St Paul, Bedford to Elizabeth Covington by whom he has three children now living – Elizabeth aged 8, Sarah aged 6 and Cassandra aged 3.
