At the age of 14 he was placed out apprentice by the Harpur’s Charity by Indenture dated 29 Dec 1817 to James Elliott of Shitlington [Shillington], blacksmith for seven year. He served about 15 months with his Master when he was turned over to Edward Irons of the same parish, blacksmith. He ran away leaving Edward Irons’ service at the beginning of the last harvest.
