- Scope and ContentCriticises Sophia snearing at imaginative people ‘our family . . . . are too matter of fact, too much absorbed in the petty details of everyday life, too little able to take a flight of the imagination, and with it a wide and comprehensive view of better things, think themselves better than everyone else ‘ whereas perhaps after all, we have only been tied down in our narrow mindedness and stuck fast in our native mire’ imagination a rare gift. pencil note by Frederica ‘never suggested a word of this’, sneers at enlargement of Hinwick House Note Sophia was of course attacking Frederica when she attacked imaginative people, hence Richard’s reaction.
