- Scope and ContentAlfred Tanner: one firkin of butter went missing from his truck. It was marked with initials. John Davis: was working at the George public house in Leighton Buzzard and whilst standing outside witnessed James Church approach Mr Tanners shop and take the butter. He watched Church leave via Peacock Alley and then told Mr Tanner David Ashpole: was passed by James Church in Peacock Alley. He saw Church was carrying something which he later put down. Mr Tanner's shopman then came into the alley, and together they found the butter abandoned. Robert Turnham: found the accused about 20 yards from the butter. The butter was returned by John Armstrong, Mr Tanner's journeyman to the shop, in the presence of Turnham, where it was identified as the missing butter. James Church: had nothing to say except he did not know where he had been to that night.
