  • Scope and Content
Dear Sir Herbert, Thank you for your letter received from Canberra. You seem to have been very fortunate with the weather during your visit but I was glad to know that during the last two weeks in New Zealand the weather was good. The weather here is very changeable. Some days are mild with either fog or rain and others very cold. On Friday we had some snow but it had been cleared on Saturday morning by rain. A letter has come from the Australia and New Zealand Bank at Auckland to say that a sum of £81.18.8d., has been remitted to your account, being a refund fom the New Zealand Government Tourist Bureau. I have acknowleged this. A further letter has come from Mr Savage of the Stevenage Baptist Church. They want you to let them have a decision about the meeting on the 7th June after you have returned home. It is a week now since the letters went out to the selected tenants for the Old People's Village and we have received acceptances from all who have replied - there are only 4 replies to come in now. You will, I know, be pleased to see the letters from these people, they all say how fortunate they are to be chosen and express their thanks and gratitude to you for this wonderful Scheme. I haven't quite finished the Sierra Leone diary but this will be finished in a few days. I am looking forward to typing your further diary of the visit to New Zealand and Australia. The Rev. & Mrs. West are returning to Congo at the end of this month. Their last Sunday in Luton will be Missionary Sunday (23rd February) which is the day on which you sail from Melbourne. Dr Williamson is coming to Luton with the deputation and he is conducting a Valedictory Service at our Church at Stopsley on the Sunday evening. Our Minister at Stopsley, Reverend Rooke, is leaving is at the end of February. He has accepted the pastorate of the Church at West Bromwich. He has been at Stopsley for 3 1/2 years. The meeting of Janes Holdings and Janes Trust is on Wednesday of this week. 12th February. The overdraft at 31st October last was £32,703 and on the 31st January it was £29,760, the estimated overdraft at 30th April 1958 is £27,444. This estimated overdraft has not taken into account a sum of £1,474 which has been agreed with H.M. Inspector of Taxes being Profits Tax Liability, which may be demanded and payable during the next three months. I think this is all for today with best wishes and kindest regards to Lady Janes and yourself. Yours very sincerely, P.S. I have been thinking about your return and wondering whether your luggage will have to be collected from Tilbury on Sunday March 23rd, perhaps you will let me know about this sometime.
