New Zealand Links With Luton Another letter from New Zealand, where Sir Herbert and Lady Janes reached the farthest point in their heath trip, shows that inconspicuous though Luton may look on the map, you will find associations with the town all over the world. Sir Herbert wrote from Christchurch mentioning just a few of the many Luton people he had come into contact with. He met Mr Wildman, who married a Miss Janes of the Janes sewing machine firm [Janes Bros Ltd, 38 High Town Road, Luton] which used to be in High Town Road, and Mr and Mrs Ellingham, relatives of Mr A.H.Norris, the chairman of the Luton Ratepayers' Association, who emigrated from Luton eight years ago. Christchurch fireman David Platt was one of the first children to attend Blenheim Crescent Baptist Church and laid a brick when the church was built. Sir Herbert also met 80 years old Mr Sidney Cherry, who worked for Mr Amos Gentle, Gordon Street hat manufacturer, and lived at Stopsley. He was a teacher at Stopsley Baptist Sunday School. Somebody from a Christchurch hospital was anxious to learn what has become of Mr Sydney Ralph Norris, of Edlesborough, who went to the hospital after release from a Japanese prison camp. Sir Herbert and Lady Janes have now started the long trip home. In his letter, which was posted on December 13, he wished all his friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also includes articles regarding St Mary's Church,Clophill, Luton's Gaumont Cinema and the Duke of Bedford on holiday in Austria.
