- Scope and ContentDear Sir Herbert and Lady Janes, Thank you for your letter of the 26th October, written on board the SS Iberia, which I received this morning. Glad to know that you had a good voyage and that you have been met by Baptist friends at the various Ports. By now you have probably seen the report which appeared in the Luton News about the Old People's village. We have had an overwhelming response and to date we have received 350 applications, of these 230 are from Luton and district and the remainder from various parts of the country. Apparently there was a paragraph in the Daily Mail, the Evening News, The Star and several provincial newspapers. We are now busy sending out the Application Forms asking for further information. Mr Lines of the Rotary Club has 'phoned me and he would like to know if you would speak to the Club when you return home next year. He would suggest some Thursday in May of next year but not the 22nd. The dates of the Thursday's in May are 1st, 8th, 15th, 29th. This is a long time ahead but Mr Lines likes to get booked up well in advance. I do not know whether you will agree to this but perhaps you would let me know about this and I will get in touch with Mr Lines. Mr Lines asked me to send on to you and Lady Janes his kindest regards. With regards to appointments, a letter came addressed to Lady Janes from Mrs Barber of the Dagnall Street Baptist Church, St Albans, asking if Lady Janes would Open [sic] their Missionary Garden Party on the 28th June next. I replied telling them that you were both away until March of next year and it was not possible for me to book any appointments during your absence and suggested that on this occasion they made some other arrangements. I hope this meets with your approval. A Statement of Accounts has come addressed to Lady Janes from C.T.Bowring & Co. regarding additional insurance premiums amounting to £13.16.6d. I shall send a cheque in payment of this at the end of the month. The last Housing Progress and Sales Report, dated 26th October, gives the total sales since 1st January at 772. I thought you would like to know this. We have had a lot of rain here during the past week and on Sunday night we had storms and gales, causing quite a lot of damage. At Hatfield New Town the roofs of several aluminium houses were blown off. This is all for now with best wishes from all at 183 High Town Road to Lady Janes and yourself. Yours very sincerely,
