- Admin/biog historyThe Quaker family of Ransom descended from Richard Ransom, (1649-1716), of Cromer, Norfolk, whose son Joseph settled in Hitchin. His son Joshua, (1790-1863), purchased Kempston Mill in 1838, which his son Edwin, (1841-1927), inherited. Edwin’s other business interests included purchasing the ‘Bedfordshire Times’, which he was proprietor of from 1872-9, and founding Kempston Gas Works in 1869. He was also elected mayor of Bedford 1885.
