  • Scope and Content
-- turnpikes on the Luton – Westwood Road are very detrimental to trade, ‘The buyers of corn of all sorts are come into a method of forestalling, making private contracts for their delivering of their goods at villages round about us to the very great grievance of the poor and the impoverishment of the Publick Houses which are very many here, whereby many poor men lose their employment of porterage, of unloading and carrying of goods so bought when in open market, to the ruin of many poor families and the general decay of trade of the said town’ All this arises from the inconvenient placing of turnpikes at St. Mary’s church, and at ‘the Fryers’. ‘Nor can we (without stopping our ears) avoid hearing the daily exclamations of the people against the present situation of the said turnpikes as an injustice to them’ 47 signatures. Bedford, February 24, 1728/9.
