".... I hope to be out in January.... We have a small boy who comes and cleans our shoes, sweeps up, does washing and makes our bed etc. and we pay him 10 akkers a fortnight (approx 2/-) and there are 24 of us so he gets about £2.10s.... he is about 16 years old and married, his wife cost him 2 goats and a donkey...."
