  • Scope and Content
Regarding Richard Orlebar’s nephew Edward Carey’s present or future income, Charles Ranken’s statement that with his mother’s concurrence he may have secured £320 per annum as at present invested, is unsatisfactory. Mrs.Wood had informed Mrs. Orlebar that he should have £400 per annum on marriage and £200 per annum after the death of herself and her sister Anna – a serious defalcation, “but considering that we have injudiciously permitted the Negotiation to proceed thus far Mrs. Orlebar, and I consent, to the Proposals although I cannot approve of the intended Match, as I could Wish. . .” Trusts he will adhere to your recommendation that the whole should be settled for the benefit of himself, his intended wife and their children. . . . Richard Orlebar and Charles Ranken agree that Edward should start clear from debt; part of any intended provision should be allotted to that purpose. Size of Richard Orlebar’s family means he must be just before he can be generous. Now allows his four sons above £400 per annum £100 per annum is the highest he could allow daughter Diana; thought of offering £80 when Mrs.Wood proposed allowance of £600 per annum, eventually was reduced to under £400; requests Charles Ranken’s opinion. Does not wish to sell out funds. What security would Charles Ranken suggest. Mrs. Orlebar anxious that deeds be sent by 17 of this month. Does not interfere with Edward’s instructions to Charles Ranken but is writing to Charles Ranken as confidential advisor. Will write shortly to brother William Augustus.
