  • Scope and Content
Thomas Gudgin says that between the 4th of January and Saturday 6th of January about a bushel of early maple peas of the value of 5 shillings were stolen from a barn on his premises at Houghton Park. He believes the peas now produced by Charles Goode are part of those stolen. Charles Goode says that in consequence of a search warrant from Thomas Gudgin the younger he had searched the house of Thomas Stapleton amongst others. He went first to the pigsty and found some peas in the trough then into the house and found some peas in a chamber in quantity about one bushel and at the desire of Mr Gudgin brought away some. Thomas Stapleton says that on Thursday evening about 6 o'clock Samuel Bushby the younger came to his house and said he had some peas for him if he came with him the next morning. "The next morning I got up a little before five o'clock and met Samuel Bushby near the church yard at Ampthill and went with him to Mr Gudgin's field near his farm yard. I stopped about two poles from the farm yard, while Bushby went into the farm yard and about five mintues afterwards Bushby called me to him and gave me a quantity of peas in a bag, and laid them upon my shoulder from the barn of Mr Gudgin. I took the peas home to my own house gave a few of them to my pigs & the rest were seized by Goode the constable this morning, as the property of Mr Gudgin." Samuel Bushby said nothing in answer to the charge.
