- Scope and ContentEldest son is provided for. To the Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer, and William Earl Poulett, government of Pennsylvania, in trust to be disposed to the best advantage and profit they can. To wife Hannah Penn and her father Thomas Callowhill, and to friends Margaret Lowther “my dear sister”, and to Gilbert Heathsoate, physician, Samuel Waldenfield, John Field, Henry Gouldney, in England, to friends Samuel Carpenter, Richard Hill, Isaac Norris,Samuel Preston and James Logan in Pennsylvania, lands in Pennsylvania in trust to sell so much as may pay debts; to convey to children of son William – Gulielma Maria, Springett and William, 10,000 acres land; remainder to children by present wife. Before conveyances to latter, 10,000 acres is to be conveyed to daughter Aubrey “whom I omitted to name before.” Personal estate etc. to wife, executrix. Witnesses: Robert West, Sarah West, Susan Reading, Thomas Pyle, Robert Lomax. “This will I made when ill of a feavour at London with a clear understanding of what I did then, but because of some unworthy expressions belying God’s goodness to me, as if I knew not what I did, I doe now, that I am recovered thro’ Gods goodness, Hereby declare it is my last Will and Testament at Ruscomb in Berkshire this 27 of third month called May 1712. William Penn.” Witnesses; Eliza Penn, Elizabeth Anderson, Thomas Pyle, Mary Chandler, Thomas Penn, Sarah Dee, Mary Dee. Postscript “in my own hand”: as a further testimony of love to wife, gives to her out of the rents of America, viz. Pennsylvania etc. £300 per annum, for life, and for care of children “and . . . I desire they may settle at least in good part in America, where I leave them so good an interest to be for their inheritance”.
