  • Scope and Content
Dear Mr & Mrs Janes, Many thanks for your letter with your good wishes for 1953. My wife and I also wish you all the best for the new year. We regret that you are unable to come to Switzerland this winter. However, as you intend to go to Rome in April and as the directest itinerary from England to Italy is via Paris - Vallorbe - Lausanne - Simplon, we hope to see you here in spring on your way to the south. In case you do not travel through Switzerland there will be no difficulty to effect a transfer to Rome. I would mention, however, that according to present Italian regulations only Lire are transferable, - with other words, any transfer to Italy will be paid out there exclusively in Lire (italian currency). - Whilst it is not permitted to send italian or foreign banknotes to Italy, tourists visiting the country are allowed to enter with any amount of foreign banknotes.- As far as Switzerland is concerned there are of course no restrictions in respect of import or export of banknotes. Actually the rate of exchange for transfers to Italy is 0.70, ie Swiss Fr.0.70 = Lit.100.- which corresponds to sw.Fr.1.- = Lit.142.85. To-day's rate of exchange for USA$ and £Sterling are Fr.4.27/4.30 and Fr.12.18/12.22 respectively. Please advise me if possible a week or two in advance of your passing through Switzerland so as to make sure that we not miss you, for we are often absent from Lausanne for a couple of days. Should you not travel via Switzerland I would be glad to get your Rome address in time to make the facilities available there. Winter in Lausanne and most other places in Switzerland less than about 3000 feet above sea level is dull and unpleasant. For days and even weeks there is hardly any sun. We are therefore looking forward to spend in February some weeks in the mountains in sun and snow. With kindest regards. Yours sincerely, M H Trachsler.
