- Scope and ContentPrinted caption on reverse: "This bridge was built in 1224 out of the ruins of old Bedford Castle, and the structure standing upon it served the double purpose of a Town Prison and Toll House. Bunyan's long imprisonment was not here, but in the County Gaol; but three years after his release in 1672 he was again imprisoned for six months, this time in the Town Goal shewn in this view. Bunyan's chief biographer, Dr. John Brown, contends that the 'Pilgrims Progress' was written here."
