Dear Herbert, Thanks for yours of the 15th inst. We were rather amused at your statement that none of you were excited at the thought of the World Tour, but opined that I was. We thought the boot would be on the other leg, as I have been abroad so often that the prospect of another trip leaves me quite calm. I note that you have introductions to a multitude of people, but trust you will not make any hard and fast committments for Ceylon. A Paignton gentleman who spent 20 years in that delectable country strongly advised me to take a trip (by car) from Colombo to Kandy, a distance of 72 miles. It takes about 3 to 4 hours each way. He spent 8 years in Kandy and says it is a paradise of a place, and the run is a very popular one with tourists. The steamers usually stay long enough for the trip to be made. As reqards luggage, I am merely taking two light cases, which I can carry, and shall bring them with me next Thursday, and park them at some convenient spot in London until Saturday. I note you have definately booked a passage from Sydney to Wellington, but in view of your suggestion to tour New Zealand by hired car I think it would be better to land at Auckland instead of Wellington. We could then work south and bring the car back to Auckland, where we shall have to embark for Vancouver. I presume however, we shall be allowed to change our destination from Wellington to Auckland if we wish. I want to look up some friends in New Zealand amongst them a nephew of mine, who is a vicar living at Whakatane about 50 mile east of Rotorua. I am taking both cameras (Cine and Brownie) and a supply of films. We were interested to hear of Henry's visit. He certainly wears well. I inclose an advert: for hired cars at Auckland, cut from the New Zealand book you sent, which will perhaps be of use to us later on. Kindest regards from Sam.
