  • Scope and Content
By authority of Pope Honorius III [1216-1227] as to the controversy of priory of Newport with Henry rector [instituted 1209/19] and Thomas vicar of Tyringham, respecting the church of Tyringham, with all its appurtenances except tithe of 2½ virgates and a croft which are of the demesne of [erasure] of Tyringham, and except tithes of the fee of Giffard de Tyringham at Astwood. The cause was heard previously by the dean of York and his fellows, and by the prior of Wartre and his fellows. The priory has renounced all claims to the church and its appurtenances, and has resigned all its charters thereof, both of {?earl] Giffard formerly patron of the church and of David archdeacon of Buckingham [occurs. c.1145-1173] into the hands of H abbot of Reading, R abbot of Chertsey, and R prior of Merton, judges formerly delegate by the pope. It will hold all tithe from the fee of Giffard in Astwood, paying to the church of Tyringham 20s. yearly; in case of failure to pay the rector may enter on the tithe without hindrance by the prior of Newport or abbot of Marmoutier. The rector and vicar resign all right in the above fee, except the burial of the dead from the whole fee with their legacies as anciently accustomed. Benedict, monk, proctor of the priory, has sworn to the observance of this agreement.
