- Admin/biog historyThis firm of solicitors was founded at Portmill Lane, Hitchin as far back as 1591. John Hawkins was articled to Joseph Eade, who had succeeded William Wilshere in the firm. In 1814 John Hawkins married Susan Theed Pearse, whose father was a solicitor and clerk of the peace for Bedfordshire. 14 years later (1828) he succeeded to Eade's practice.
- Scope and ContentThe collection mainly covers the parishes closest to the Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire border, namely: Barton, Gravenhurst, Clophill, Shillington, Henlow, Clifton, Arlesey, Stotfold, Langford, Astwick, but also includes: Houghton Regis, Flitton, Biggleswade, Sandy, Cardington, Kempston, Oakley and Harrold.
