Hawkins of Hitchin, solicitors

This firm of solicitors was founded at Portmill Lane, Hitchin as far back as 1591. John Hawkins was articled to Joseph Eade, who had succeeded William Wilshere in the firm. In 1814 John Hawkins married Susan Theed Pearse, whose father was a solicitor and clerk of the peace for Bedfordshire. 14 years later (1828) he succeeded to Eade's practice.
Scope and Content
The collection mainly covers the parishes closest to the Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire border, namely: Barton, Gravenhurst, Clophill, Shillington, Henlow, Clifton, Arlesey, Stotfold, Langford, Astwick, but also includes: Houghton Regis, Flitton, Biggleswade, Sandy, Cardington, Kempston, Oakley and Harrold.

Deposited by the firm between 1932 and 1941. Accession numbers 882-827, 1486, 1492-3, 1848, 3996(per Hertfordshire Record Office, 1975, 4883, 4888, 4974, 1980.
HA1-12 were catalogued in 1933, HA13-32 in 1937. HA33 deposited and catalogued 1938, HA34 January 1950, HA35-1333 deposited via Hertfordshire Record OfficeDecember 1940 and May 1941.
