Stuart Corbett, Wortley, to Marquess: Has heard from Brown that writer's suggestions have offended lordship. Not capable of Directing Brown to act in contradiction to your commands. Your letter of 27 July not communicated to me till last week. Brown seems to have been led astray by a mistake of Sir George Osborn, who in his anxiety to arm the country has construed into a message from lordship a conversation he had with writer at Bedford as follows. At the county meeting while Lordship was at the Park, it was
observed there was no noblemen absent but sent offer of service;when Sir George enquired, I thought it duty to say Marquess'
engagements in Glamorgan made it impossible that he should take active part in Beds., but no objection to tenants serving.
Upon stopping an hour or two at Luton on return to Yorks., found volunteer returns being filled up; tenants ardently wished formation of vol. cavalry but wanted to know Marquess' sentiments;therefore wrote to Brown, referring him to Marquess. ''That he should pay more attention to what he supposed my sentiments, when you had made known to him your own, excites astonishments''. No
further communication from my leaving Luton till he was alarmed by Lordship's anger. Writer may have misled him. Corps so v. popular in Luton & country at large, almost afraid to ask Lordship not reject it; but could let it be known that Lordship will not take any decided part.
