  • Admin/biog history
A school for boys was founded by Henricus Octavius Roe in 1808 (conveyance of land to build the school). When the National school, later known as St Mary’s School, opened in 1843, it admitted both boys and girls of all ages. However from 1879 infants remained at St. Mary’s until seven years of age then all boys moved on to what then became known as the Stotfold Boys’ School and only girl's remained at St Mary's. In 1890 a school board was formed and the school was enlarged. As with other board schools it transferred to the county council as the local education authority in 1903. It became a county primary in 1946. From 1971 girls were admitted to the school (St Mary's became mixed boys and girls at the same time). Roecroft was successively known as Stotfold Endowed Boys' School, Board Boys, Council Boys (1903), CP Boys, CP mixed and from 1975 Roecroft Lower School. The school was originally in Church Road; in 2011 the school relocated to Buttercup Road.
