  • Scope and Content
Written at Harrold, ‘Friday afternoon’. My very dearest Pollie, Yours safely to hand this morning for which accept many thanks. I was afraid I should not get it this morning. I am very glad, as I wanted to write and settle the matter today, which I intend doing at once. I will do exactly as you wish and think now it will perhaps be much the best way to leave it entirely with you, but it is really too bad that is should all fall on you. I wish I had never mentioned it at Bedford, but that is of very little use now. Mamma and Nelly Fever have gone there today. I did think of sending to the Registar by them but they seem to have such a lot of business to transact I thought they would forget it. I am very glad my dear girl you meet with such kind friends in your to and fro journeys. Give my very kind regards to Mr. and Mrs. Bates and family; tell them I am extremely obliged for all their kindnesses towards you and shall be most happy if it ever lays [sic] in my power to render them any assistance. Has this Breach of Promise trial come off yet? Mrs. Wykes was telling me that it was on Wednesday, and that John Wiggins escorted the lady or whoever it may be to give her evidence. I thought perhaps I should have heard all about it in your letter. I heard from Papa this morning; he says he is better and intends coming home on Monday; seems to be enjoying himself very much, only that the weather is a little against them. I posted a letter to you from Mamma yesterday. I suppose you have had it ere this. And a newspaper to Jethro. I have several more letters to write and have only a little time so must not say more today. Excuse this scrawl. Give my love to your dear Mamma and all your household-- and accept all my very best love for your darling self from Your own ever loving and affectionate Hugh P.S. I will write again soon. I spent the evening with Arthur and Lizzy and Miss Hawkings yesterday. They are going to make us a present of a dinner service, so they had got it set out for me to see; ‘tis a very nice one. Goodbye, (A WEEK NEXT WEDNESDAY)-- much love, HS
