  • Scope and Content
Written at Little Odell; ‘Monday’. ... I have been wanting to write you since my return home, but different domestic duties have seemed to take up so much of my time. I hardly knew how to squeeze out an hour for so important a matter. The subject of my letter to you my dear is most important and I do hope and believe that you and my dear Boy equally feel it to be so. I sincerely trust you will both seek the guidance and direction of your Heavenly Father and should it be His will your present engagement with each other may, at some future time, end in a happy union; one which will never cause regret or anxiety. As the Child of an old and valued friend I have always loved you, but now as you are the object of my dear Child’s choice and affection, that love seems to have increased and the regard and esteem which as families we have always felt for each will be much strengthened for the future. I hope your dear Mamma is in every way willing that Hugh should correspond and visit you occasionally; it will be so much more satisfactory both to his Papa and myself to know that all parties are in every way agreeable. I am happy to tell you dear Lissie is much better for the change to Hastings, although still very weak. I hope your Mama continues better and all the household are well, to whom please give my very kind love in which my Husband joins with an extra portion for yourself, from yours most affect’ly....
