Longitudinal section arrangement drawing of steam turbine (drg No T1/91986) Note from Mr Curtis identifies it ‘as for a condensing turbine from a 225 kW turbo generator set ordered by the Royal Navy in 1933 under Working No T1/38331 for the cruiser HMS Ajax. the design steam conditions were inlet 240psi 603o F, exhaust 28.25 inches vacuum. The set would accept 10% overload. The design was developed into very similar machines of 300kW which were supplied for HMS Belfast. Unfortunately the drawing does not show details of the steam inlet arrangements but reference to the Belfast drawings show that the control system was of the old style lever governor type. The rotor is of the built-up type with separate discs keyed to the shaft. Such a method of construction was anathema to Allen practice in later years. The unit is fitted with carbon main steam glands although the interstage baffles have glands of the labyrinth type. The general style of the drawing is reminiscent of earlier drawing practice with an arrow to each item at the end of which is a description along with details of the material. This style was repeated on the Belfast drawings. The general layout of the set is however typical of Allen practice of many years, siting above its own condenser and with the circulating and extraction pumps driven by bevel gears from the fee end of the shaft. This layout developed into a design in which the condenser shell actually formed the turbine baseplate – the Allen AWLINWUN design.’Blueprint
