  • Scope and Content
On 11 April 1738 Robert Clare by his will devised to his daughter Mary Clare and her heirs: his three messuages, cottages or tenements in Bedford St Paul, two whereof are in the Fish market and then in the occupations of Charles Jones and Mary Marchant, widow, and one in the High Street and then in the occupation of Sarah Smart. (Mary Clare afterwards married Isaac Hurst by whom she had one son, Robert Harris Hurst, clerk, and she died in her husband's lifetime, and he died 22 June 1754.) For the joint lives of his daughter Elizabeth Dodgson and her husband Benjamin Dodgson in trust to keep premises in repair and pay residue to Elizabeth Dodgson or put money out at interest for the benefit of his grandson and granddaughter, Robert and Elizabeth Dodgson, to be paid them at 21 at discretion of Mary Clare. On determination of that estate: - the two tenements in occupation of Jones and Marchant to grandson Robert Dodgson for life, then to heirs of Robert Dodgson; in default to granddaughter Elizabeth Dodgson for life, then to her heirs; in default to daughter Mary Clare and her heirs and assigns for ever. - tenement in occupation of Sarah Smart after death of daughter Elizabeth Dodgson to granddaughter Elizabeth Dodgson and heirs; in default to grandson Robert Dodgson and heirs; in default to daughter Mary Clare and heirs and assigns for ever. He also gave to Mary Clare his daughter: - his leasehold messuage held of the Corporation of Bedford, late in the occupation of Anthony Rush and then of Sarah Smart for residue of term, to apply the rents to the persons entitled to the freehold. Lease renewed 31 May 1742, and described as in Bedford St Paul near Girdlers Lane, abutting South on the Lane and on the tenements of the said Robert Clare East and West. Elizabeth Dodgson the granddaughter married John Price of Warsall, Staffordshire, mercer. Mr Price died about 1772, leaving Mrs Price his widow and an only child, Mr John Price, minister at Bath. Mrs Price continued in receipt of the rents until her death about two years ago, since which time Mr John Price the son has been in possession. The original title deeds to the estate are wanting by reason that Mr Price the father in his life time about 25 years became a bankrupt and the assignees under the Commission got possession of the title deeds, and they remained in the hands of the solicitor to the Commission until by some accident they were with other things burnt. Premises are in good repair and rents: Mrs Veale £10 a year Mr Lilburn £3 a year Mr Hinds £4 a year
