    (A) Grant: Abel de Pyro to Robert de Londres, burgess of Bedford, and wife Alice; for their service and a sum of money - a tenement in parish of St Peter de Merton, as it lies in front of the door(s) ("portal") of Nicholas Culbere in the middle street ("in medio vico"). At a yearly rent of 3s. to the King in the name of the farm ("in nomine firme"), and of a red rose to the grantor for every kind of service. Witnesses: Simon Brodeye (then alderman of Bedford), Nicholas Culbere, Richard his brother, Lambert son of Lambert, Thomas son of Lambert, Herbert Mercer (then bailiffs of the same), William son of Assellinus, William son of Vincent, Philip de Kerdyngton, William son of Ralph, Thomas Barschot, Robert (and) Geoffrey his brothers, Hubert son of Folebrych, James son of William. (B) Grant: Master William De Loundres to John Culbere of Bedford and wife Joan. A tenement in the parish of St Peter de Merton, as it lies in front of the doors of the said John and Joan Culbere in the middle street. At the same rents. Witnesses: John Brodeye (then alderman of Bedford), Robert de Steventone, Richard Olyver (then bailiffs of the same), Thomas Halyday, Wiliam son of Henry, John Calt, William Bascot.

    These two grants are copies, written on one piece of (?)parchment each beginning "Dat: per copiam") Grant A is dated "Anno domini millesimo centesimo xl septimo" (i.e. 1147), but this date is clearly an error. The deed is assignable to c1200 - 1220, improbably to 1247. Grant B dates from c1270 - 1310
