N.B. letter from C.H. Breed, School House Stopsley. to Alderman Dillingham. Pretext trespass by schoolboys - outline history of school and yard.
Yard let to him 1908 by Beds. Education Committee - barn his wood shed - rate assessment increased in yard 1925.
Ex - soldiers' club always used other yard;
Old Squire Crawley built this school and also Caddington in a similar style, when there was no vicar or church in Stopsley. Mrs.Crawley came twice a week to teach needlework.
Rev. O' Neill 1880 leased building to School Board. Wm. Drewett, Hoyle and Breed concerned copy lease.
Services allowed till 1893 when real vicar ' for the first time made this naturally lapse' in school.
Vicar etc. allowed to teach Scripture twice a week.
1908 and 1912 new schools altered things altogether.'
As buildings on common land, ownership reverted to Lady of Manor - 'my duty as member of Court Leet was to be supervisor of her ladyship's rights'. Luton Corporation now Lord of Manor.
Church magazine for St. Thomas Church Stopsley obviously considerable trouble previous to this re school house.
