- Scope and ContentAfter death of himself and his wife estate will go to daughter Catherine. ‘…I am well aware that a difficult and delicate question will then devolve upon my said dear daughter in having to decide upon an heir to the said Flitwick Estate, and whereas I would assist her in this matter if possible and whereas I, my dear wife, and my said daughter, are all entirely in agreement in this matter, and whereas there are family reasons well known to each of us …which render it unadvisable and inexpedient that either of the children of my Brothers George Henry Brooks and Thomas William Dell Brooks should directly succeed to the possession of the said Flitwick Estate, at and after my said dear daughter’s death. I therefore …desire to record that it is my dearest wish that the succession to the said Flitwick Estate after my dear daughter’s death should devolve upon Robert Adolphus Lyall (2 son of Sir Alfred C Lyall KCB) whose wife Cora Lyall is neice (brother’s child) of my dear wife) for whom I entertain every confidence and affection, he having lived some years, as a boy at Flitwick and been looked upon by me as a son. – The said Robert Aldolphus Lyall being now in the army in India – and after the death of the said R A Lyall that the succession to the said Estate of Flitwick should revert to the children of my said Brothers, George Henry and Thomas William Dell according to their respective seniority rights.’ Signed by John Hatfield Brooks. Witnesses Capt Shelton, RA retired and David Evans, butler.
