  • Scope and Content
Reads- Daresay Kent in wretched state, don't know what he is fit for; Higgins tried him as book-keeper for one of his night coaches @ 6s. or 8s. week; he gave it up, since when only trifling employment. His land at Cranfield let for £8 per annum. Don't know where he lives - since house in St. Paul's pulled down Elger & Witt promised almshouse, but no chance now. Will speak to Higgins. Tithe Act; no difficulty in enclosed parishes, but in open fields a great deal; sometimes even necessary to enclose first. Beard thinks the new enclosure act will do for Cranfield. Duke cannot object to enclosure if his rights are protected; Beard will have a strong opposition. What does Duke think of enclosing Cranfield? Wing here from Thorney last week. Shaw Lefevre:- our Bedfordshire farmers are in great dudgeon at his opinion of the corn laws, but it is a question which has gained much ground even amongst the prejudiced, and it cannot be blinked much longer. Illiberality a sad bar to improvement. Weather.
