"The prisoner John Pateman now in charge being asked what he has to say in regard to the charge now brought against him, says, that about five or six weeks ago, he found a hat, which Samuel Sanuders now claims as his, he found it laying in the road between Chalton & Toddington, & that a few days afterwards he sold it to John Tilcock for 3d. He sold it about five or six o'clock in the evening. He was then he thinks in his own house when he sold the hat." Signed with the mark of John Pateman. On the back of the statement is a note to the effect that Samuel Saunders was in custody at the time the statements were taken charged with a felony.
