  • Scope and Content
Property in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire that came to the Brooks family through Ann Fisher (daughter of Jeffery and Ann Fisher). Ann Fisher married first Mr Hesse and then Mr Brooks. For fuller biographical history see V1-321. Title to the Northamptonshire properties came from the Fisher family. The Radwell and Ampthill properties were subject to the marriage settlement of Jeffery Fisher and his wife Ann. The properties in Maulden and the fee farm rent of Flitwick came from the godfather of Ann Fisher - Dr Dell. The property bequeathed to Ann Fisher by Dr Dell was to be held in trust and her mother was to have the use of it. However, on the death of Ann Fisher senr., and in spite of Ann Fisher (by that time Ann Hesse) being in a position to hold the property herself, the use of the property remained with her father who susequently left a will leaving the estate to which he had no title to John Bolding. This resulted in court action by Mrs Hesse and a subsequent settlement with John Bolding to recover the estate that was legally hers. In the 1850s Mr Brooks wished to sell some of the property in Irchester in order to purchase the advowson of Flitwick and the correspondence (see HN2/B3) reveals difficulties in proving the title, which may be the cause of some of the copies of documents relating to the Fisher estate that clearly date from this period.
