    Exemplification of a Chancery decree Plaintiffs: George Daniell, vicar of Stevington, William King, churchwarden, William Dennis, Stevington, yeoman. Defendants: Thomas Barringer, Philip Owen, Matthew Billing .Whereas On May 24th 1639 the plaintiffs complained that William Barringer by a will of 18 March 1631/2 left the residue of his estate to be applied by his exors. "in the building and making of ... almshouses for poor men". The exors; William's brother Thomas Barringer and Thomas Owen, with Matthew Billing "combined together to make the intention of so pious and charitable a work to come to none effect" They had appropriated Wm. Barringer's personal estate, some £1500 to £1600. Owen had got into his hands all the books of account, shopbooks and household goods; Billing converted the estate to his own use. Owen gave account of certain bonds held by the testator; also gave lease of shop to Billing. Owen and T. Barringer had erected 5 almshouses. Further details of bonds given by Billing, Afterward The £400 surplus in the hands of the defendants to be delivered to Thomas Alston Esq. Robert Bromehall, gent and George Daniell, vicar on 4 December 15 Chas. I [1639] to buy land to support the poor people in the 5 almshouses. John Mann of Turvey and Barnard Hopkins, feoffees in trust, to "Take care of the indifferent distribution thereof amongst the said poore" Afterward Report ratified 18 May last [1640]. In court on 5 June [1640] the defendant Matthew Billing claimed the following allowances, £9 15s 1d on account, £5 disbursed to the poor of Stevington, 40s paid to Barrett Homes, legatee, 40s to Thomas Barrett, legatee, £4 17s for tolls and charges, £70 for "his paines and journeys"; to be allowed £15 And 25 June [1640] William Dennis and John Barringer, son of Thos. Barringer appointed additional feoffees .Decreed On 16 December [1640] the defendants to hand over the money, bonds, bills and books of account to the plaintiffs. Stamped: "Received. Charity Com.
