  • Scope and Content
Reads- Thank you for executing Milton Bryant commission to avoid disadvantages which poor old Job Foxley would be placed in by going to the poorhouse. I suggested to Duke it would be better for John Chance (his bro.-in-law) to get him a lodging at some cottage, & then the parish allowance of 3/6 or 4/ - per week, with the addition of Duke's allowance, might make him tolerably comfortable & independent of overseers' poorhouse discipline. Duke agrees. Mr. Reed of Eversholt, the only resident magistrate, will give an order to parish officers to allow Job whatever Mr. R. may think right. Duke wants me to write to Chance to get lodging & call on Mr. Reed. List of staff for assessed taxes with names:- * Butler Valet Groom of chambers Cook Confectioner Gardener Poulterer Assistant do. Park-keeper 4 gamekeepers * Baker * Under-butler * 4 Footmen * Usher of hall * Town porter 2 lodge-keepers Porter (Abbey) Lamplighter Kitchen-man Laundryman 2 coachmen (1st *) 2 postillions Chairman 2 helpers in livery 6 grooms Steward's room lad * Steward (John Stagg) * Wear hair-powder
